My Antonia

Willa Cather in her novel My Antonia (yes, a signal phrase) offers her view of life during the pioneer time.

If the book was told through Antonia's eyes the view point wouldn't show her growth throughout the book. Telling the story through Jim let us see how she matured and relied on him during troubled times. You would have gotten to know more about her feelings and thoughts if it had been told like that.

Willa Cather does a pretty good job at telling the story as a man.

The way that she wrote his parts makes him sound like a man, not a woman pretending to be a man. Her use of words and how she put them together, was the biggest part of that.

Because he was telling the story of his Antonia , not really her story, but a story about them  the girl he knew.

The Author, Willa Cather, did a wonderful job telling Antonia's story through Jim.

Argument : tattoos and piercings are more acceptable in society

Evidence-concrete detail:
  • As far as trends go body art is becoming the rising star of ways to express your individuality. In recent years showing some skin has never looked better, skin with some ink that is. more and more young adults are getting tattoos and piercings for the main reason that " I'm 18 and  I can pretty much do what I want."
commentary1: People want to get tattoos for many reasons like memories of loved ones or just the fact that they are following celebrities who are notorious for showing off their body art. The appeal of tattoos in todays society is undeniable.

Commentary 2:  Students are a major part of the rising popularity of tattoos. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center 36 percent of those ages 18 to 25 have atleast one tattoo. With all the influences on t.v. , such as the show L.A. Ink wiht Kat Von D, people are much more accepting of tattos and piercings.

  • Tattos make people feel sexier, 83 percent of people who got tattoos said they did not regret it. With todays ever-changing society its no wonder they are being welcomed.
Commentary 1: There is a new "eveyone is doing it" feeling going through the younger generation. If one of their friends gets a tattoo they think that they can or chould get one. Some feel like if will make them 'fit in' better.

Commentary 2: Tattoos have become more of a fashion statement than anything, almost becoming the best new accessory. Tattoos have even made their way into high fashion and runways. people are just more accepting of body art than they were even 50 years ago. In the 1900s people with multiple tattoos we considered freaks and put on display in the circus.

Opposing Claims/They Say:
  • People lie about regreting getting a tattoo.
  • Somne think that tattos are just a phase that you go through or something has to be wrong with you to even want that done to your body.
  • Religions claims that you shouldn't destroy your body like that.
My Rebuttal/I Say:
  • Tattos and piercings are just another way to show your individuality, like hair color or clothing.
  • Don't judge people by the way that they look.

As far as trends go body art is becoming the rising star of ways to express your individuality. In recent years showing some skin has never looked better, skin with some ink that is. Research shows that more and more young people are getting tattoos and piercings for the fact that " I'm 18 and I can pretty much do what I want." A main reason that tattoos are so popular is because people want tangible memories of loved ones and better times. Students are also a great part of that majority, getting tattoos to idolize their favorite movie star or athlete. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center 36 percent of those ages 18 to 25 have at least one tattoo.  The show L.A. Ink with Kat Von D, made people are much more accepting of tattoos and piercings. Not everyone is so accepting though, some people say that tattoos and piercings are self mutilation and against the word of the Lord. More likely though people just say that tattoos are just a phase you go through and you'll regret it someday, but 83% of people who get tattoos do not regret them. And nowadays tattoos have even become the next best fashion accessory, making their way onto high-end fashion runways. Tattoos are not as reprehensible as they were even just a few years ago. No longer are they means to be put on display in a caged circus act, now they are on display everywhere.

Effects of Setting

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie.  The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together.  The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

The setting of My Antonia has a great effect on the characters perception of beauty, the way that they describe it shows that they enjoy the changing of the landscape. Living in an ever-the-same place like the prairie made them appreciate things more too. Like Antonia loves the land she ,eventually, stays and farms it.

The creek down from my grandfathers house symbolizes serinity to me. Watching the small fish dart and play through the dancing leaves is so calming and beautiful to me. The trees standing tall and watchful over their home, roots forever grasping for the open water, weaving themselves into the rock. And the beautiful clamness of the small water fall as it sings over the broken rocks and debrie, turning evenbeer cans into an instument for its song.

sub. clause poem

After I wake up in the morning,
As I adjust to the dewy light of the day,
While tyring to peal the sleep from my eyes,
Before my daily arguments with family
Usually my mother is feeling argumentative.

Because my room isnt clean,
while my mother is yelling at me,
if i dont clean it shes going to blow,
since i was told seven times,
I eventually clean my room.

Book review for Iron King by Julie Kagawa

The Iron fey series as a whole are simply amazing; the author does a wonderful job of portraying Meghan’s feelings of regret and longing. The first book, Iron King, is probably my favorite though. In the beginning Meghan is just another angst ridden teen trying to survive high school in the outskirts of Louisiana, her best friend Robbie Goodfell in tow. Then on the day of her 16th birthday her four-year-old brother Ethan gets kidnapped by faeries, Meghan also finds out that her best friend of sixteen years “Robbie” is actually Robin Goodfellow, a.k.a Puck. Together they must travel into the darkest parts of Nevernever looking for Ethan.  Discovering hidden parts of Meghan’s past along with ominous predictions of the future. Soon they are even accompanied by the unfeeling, Unsellie prince Ash; and the cat sithe Grimalkin. Bound by contracts and promises they set out looking for the Iron King, before he finds them.

Wounded Warrior Project

I believe that the Wounded Warrior Project is a wonderful organization , and helping them is the least we can do for our wounded soldiers.

Giving to the Wounded Warrior Project is also a tax dudectuble contribution. The number of wounded is steadily growing, as is the needs of these brave men and wemon. Who were injured trying to protect this life that you take for granted so much. Thats right, while your haivng your BigMac and coffee they're out there getting shot at and trying to protect this country.

Now don't get me wrong, i'm not one to talk about patriotism and fighitng for your country. In fact I hate the military and most of the government, but even I apprecitae and can see the sacrifices they have made for our freedoms. Showing them that we care and remember those sacrifices shouldn't be something that you have to be forced to do.

Wounded Warrior Project is a great organization that helps not only the soldiers themselves but also thier families. Providing comfort to those who have to watch their loved ones hurt and helping the soldiers get care. Mainly I thinkthat this organization is bringing them back into the public spotlight and trying to get people to remember those who fight for freedom.

The Wounded Warrior Project  is an incredibly great organization that is dedicated to helping fallen soldiers.

Fight or flight reflex: Henery vs. Forrest

In in tense situations a person's instinct to run varies based on their character, because of one's definition of self-preservation.

Forrest unlike Henry, who ran because he was afraid to be killed, ran because his officer told him to do so. And even then he wouldn't completely listen. Forrest's reflect was fight not flight, he had been trained so well that he even went back to help his fallen comrades after he noticed that he was running by himself.

Henry ran because he was afraid, not because his side was told to retreat. He even ran past other soldiers that were running, Henry's first reflex was flight, mainly because he wasn't ready for a fight like that. Looking back he even missed his boring life back home.

Forrest's first reaction to an oncoming battle was to fight for survival, while Henry's was to run away to preserve his life even just a bit longer.

War Is...

War is destroying,lives and homes.
War is killing, our devoted soldiers.
War is crawling, towards freedom for all.
War is hating, what is different from us.
War is needed, protecting what is dear to us.
War is believing, that everything will be alright.
War is depleting, countries sources and morale.
War is serving, a government that doesn't care about you.
War is standing, for our beliefs .
War is death, of this country.

Book review: Slice of Cherry

I've never been to hot and humid Texas but Dia Reeves mad me feel as if i were right there with the characters experiencing everything with Kit and Fancy. The daughters of The Bonesaw Killer of Portero, and they know that its only a matter of time before they follow in his foot steps.

Their dad was caught and is now on death row, but the sisters refuse to fall into the same trap. Using clever control Fancy knows that she can protect herself and her impulsive sister from the same fate as their father.

She eventually finds the missing crank, thanks to her dead ancestor Cherry, to her fathers kinetoscope. which was long abandoned in the dark killing cellar. Using this they are able to open "doors" to Fancy's world, a place where they can kill without remorse or conviction.

I really loved this book because Dia Reeves puts you into the story; and you end up feeling the anxiety and loneliness along with the characters. With all the twists and turns this books takes you won't be able to put it down. Following killings, crushes, magic and the fantasy world where buried victims grow into beautiful, and strange, trees.

Remembering 9.11

I really have no opinion on 9.11, its not that I don't feel pity for those who have lost love ones, I just try to see both sides of the attack. i think that Al-Qaeda members do believe that they are doing what is right and what they're God wants of them.

When 9.11 happened I was only a 10 year old little girl watching this in school with the rest of her class. Really the only thing i remember is deeming that it was boring and going back to drawing.

The attacks on 9.11 are no different from catholic crusades or holy wars from history class. Things like this have always happened and always will. That's just a fact of nature, when humans disagree they fight. No amount of anti-terrorism will stop this; people like this will always believe what they believe no matter how much we punish them.

Even if we disband and convict every member of Al-Qaeda, another group will form, yelling out beliefs that contradict with ours and inevitably end  in violence. Violence is just encoded into our DNA.
